eBay mobile sales double over Black Friday 2009
Digital marketplace eBay reports that Black Friday sales in the U.S. across its suite of mobile applications almost doubled over the previous year, with the company's worldwide mobile sales on track to nearly triple over 2009. According to eBay, mobile bidding on Black Friday increased 30 percent over the previous Friday, with peak mobile buying hours taking place between 8:00 pm and 10:00 pm ET. eBay expects to top $1.5 billion in mobile sales this year--since the introduction of its first mobile application in July 2008, on-the-go consumers have bought or sold nearly 30 million items.
Earlier this month, Bay released a new version of its iPhone application that adds RedLaser barcode scanning technology, offering consumers new tools to comparison shop across a variety of product categories. According to eBay, iPhone app users can now more efficiently research sales trends, quickly list items for sale and manage listings--in addition, sellers can search completed listings to see what similar items recently sold for, and leverage the RedLaser scanning technology to list it for eBay sale in 60 seconds or less. Also new: My eBay Quick View (a homescreen solution including watching, buying and selling updates as well as access to the member's user profile including their feedback), Buyer Protection, Quick PayPal Payment, Saved Searches and Reminders.
With the holiday shopping season ramping up, eBay notes that this year's most popular electronics items include Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad tablet and iPhone 4. Some of the most popular search terms since Nov. 1 include Prince William, Bristol Palin, Harry Potter, Ugg boots, San Francisco Giants and the Chronicles of Narnia franchise.
