Panasonic, Samsung and Sony team to secure HD content on mobile devices
Panasonic, Samsung Electronics, SanDisk, Sony and Toshiba have agreed to collaborate on the development of new content protection technologies designed for implementation across connected devices.
Tentatively dubbed the Next Generation Secure Memory Initiative, the effort will focus on content safeguards optimized for flash memory cards like SD Cards as well as various storage devices. The five partner companies promise to develop solutions robust enough to protect high-definition content, applying unique identification technologies and robust copy protection tools based on public key infrastructure.
The Next Generation Secure Memory Initiative partners state the resulting technology will enable consumers to experience various HD content applications (including HD network download, broadcast content to go and digital copies from Blu-ray discs) across a range of devices including smartphones and tablets running Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android as well as TVs and Blu-ray players. The firms plan to begin licensing the new secure memory technology early next year.
