M-commerce sales--including all purchases made via smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices, excluding travel and event ticketing--are on pace to experience another 55.7 percent jump in 2013, increasing to $38.4 billion, corresponding to 15 percent of all U.S. digital sales. eMarketer credits the segment's continued growth to factors including the growing number of consumers making purchases and shopping decisions on smartphones as well as the rapid rise in tablet-based shopping, noting that tablets generated $13.9 billion in U.S. retail sales in 2012, surpassing smartphones ($9.9 billion) for the first time.

eMarketer anticipates tablet-based shopping will increase to $24 billion in 2013, a figure that will almost double to $46.4 billion in 2015. Smartphone-based shopping will grow at a slower pace, increasing to $13.4 billion this year and reaching $20.4 billion by 2015.

Purchases on other mobile device platforms, like e-readers, will make up a small share of retail m-commerce throughout the forecast period, eMarketer adds. These devices yielded $940 million in sales in 2012 and will contribute just $1.37 billion in 2015.
