Ericsson: Mobile TV mainstream by 2008

Tools

Mobile television will penetrate the mass consumer market in 2008, Swedish vendor giant Ericsson said in a press briefing last week. The company forecasts within two years, about one third of global mobile subscribers will regularly view TV broadcasts via wireless handsets. Ericsson said it will work closely with partner Sony to develop new media solutions based on the Digital Living Network Alliance, a cross-industry standard enabling digital devices to share content through a home network. Ericsson executives demonstrated one such solution allowing consumers to share video clips and photos between conventional televisions and mobile phones.

Ericsson also announced a partnership with Belgian operator Proximus to provide an end-to-end mobile TV solution that includes what Ericsson called "the world's fastest channel selector solution," enabling viewers to surf between channels by pressing number keys on their handsets a la traditional remote control devices.
