EU: Harmonize mobile TV rules, regulations

Tools

The European Union's Information Society Commissioner Viviane Reding echoed statements made last week by mobile TV industry leaders that the mobile TV sector in Europe cannot wait until 2012 for spectrum. She also cited results of "the first pilot projects" that suggest half of European mobile phone subscribers may become mobile TV users. That's 200 million people. Those results sound similar to Nokia's DVB-H pilots that I wrote about yesterday. Reding also implies that the industry should agree on DVB-H by referencing that it was the Europeans who convinced "Brazil and Argentina to make the choice for the worldwide deployed DVB standard... we need to apply the same logic in Europe as we promote abroad." Most analysts have assumed DVB-H will be the technology of choice for Europe, but DMB has a toehold.
