European mobile leaders endorse TV standards
European operators and manufacturers including Vodafone, O2 Europe, T-Mobile, Nokia and Ericsson announced their endorsement of a common mobile TV implementation profile in order to ensure interoperability and future-proof future technological developments. The companies threw their combined weight behind the profile developed within the Broadcast Mobile Convergence Forum, which supports the DVB-H and MBMS broadcast standards to enable the extension of current business models and broaden current and future mobile TV services. According to the Broadcast Mobile Convergence Forum, the implementation profile guarantees the best possible interoperability between handsets and broadcast systems, enabling large-scale device development and accelerating European mobile TV deployment.
"Nokia warmly welcomes the industry agreement for the end-to-end implementation profile that caters for both DVB-H and 3G solutions," said Nokia's director of multimedia Jouni Kämäräinen in a prepared statement. "We see a strong parallel to the early days of development of GSM. The great commitment in the industry for a clear implementation profile will be followed by common test practices that will create a coherent and open market for successful worldwide DVB-H deployments. The bmcoforum implementation profile of the OMA BCAST standard is essential in launching mobile TV services on a global scale."
