Facebook acquires graphics apps maker Digital Staircase
Facebook has acquired three-year-old mobile startup Digital Staircase, the developer behind a series of photo and video applications including MovieCam, SmartSplice and StereoCam. Financial terms of the agreement are unknown.
Digital Staircase confirmed the deal on its blog. "As with any startup, there have been ups and downs, but we've always had a blast working with you all to create new graphics apps and tools that make the joy of visual computing accessible," the firm writes. "We're announcing today that we're joining Facebook, where we'll help to bring these kind of mobile innovations to a broader audience."
Digital Staircase states that it will wind down as a standalone entity by early December, at which time it will also remove all of its iOS applications from Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) App Store. Consumers who've already downloaded Digital Staircase apps can continue to use them. "Please look out for new innovations to be added to Facebook," the startup adds.
Digital Staircase is the latest in a series of mobile startups acquired by Facebook--since 2011 began, the social networking giant has scooped up group messaging services firm Beluga, mobile app platform provider Snaptu and mobile ad solutions developer Rel8tion. More than 350 million users worldwide now access the Facebook platform via mobile device each month.
