Facebook released version 2.3 of its mobile social networking application for Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone operating system, vowing a series of enhancements requested by users.

Slated for release today via Microsoft's Windows Phone Marketplace, Facebook for Windows Phone 2.3 is highlighted by improved news feed performance and navigation along with a new panorama design and new profile design. Also new: Support for Facebook Groups, feed filters, greater posting privacy and multiple bug fixes.
Facebook now tops 850 million users worldwide, with more than 425 million users accessing the platform via mobile device each month. Nielsen reports that Facebook is now the most popular application across all mobile operating systems.
Earlier this month, Facebook filed paperwork for an initial public offering with the Securities and Exchange Commission, stating it plans to raise $5 billion. "We are devoting substantial resources to developing engaging mobile products and experiences for a wide range of platforms, including smartphones and feature phones," Facebook wrote in its filing. "In addition, we are working across the mobile industry with operators, hardware manufacturers, operating system providers, and developers to improve the Facebook experience on mobile devices and make Facebook available to more people around the world. We believe that mobile usage is critical to maintaining user growth and engagement over the long term."
