Tools

Open-source software development initiative Mozilla is poised to debut the alpha release of Firefox for Mobile, a full-featured web browser optimized for the mobile platform. Codenamed "Fennec," the browser boasts the Gecko HTML rendering engine also found in desktop Firefox, with full JavaScript capability and AJAX--in addition, it will feature to so-called "awesome bar," an intuitive URL box the promises to minimize manual text input. Firefox for Mobile is initially limited exclusively to the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet, but Mozilla vice president of mobile Jay Sullivan tells PCWorld that a release for Windows Mobile-based handsets is in the works, for release within the next few months--Sullivan adds that the alpha release is designed to encourage developers to create new add-ons for the Firefox platform, and to that end the browser will include a JavaScript-based geo-location interface to enable various location-based applications.
