Flurry: 20M U.S. subscribers using mobile apps every hour
An average of more than 20 million U.S. subscribers access mobile applications every hour between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. according to new data published by mobile app analytics provider Flurry. Put into comparison with the American television audience, the season finale of primetime's top-rated series American Idol averages 20 million viewers each year: "[Mobile app usage is] already the equivalent of 17 American Idol finales each day, or more than 6,200 American Idol finales per year," writes Flurry vice president of marketing Peter Farago on the firm's blog.

Mobile app usage compares favorably with television viewing and Internet access throughout the average day--in fact, mobile app usage is higher than either between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Flurry notes. Although the relative number of television viewers eclipses the mobile app user audience during the primetime hours of 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm, app usage continues to increase until 9:00 p.m., staying ahead of web usage during that time, suggesting that consumers are accessing mobile apps instead of or alongside primetime TV and the Internet. "In fact, the percent of relative mobile app usage is greater than that of relative Internet usage every hour of every day," Farago adds.
Flurry estimates that the combined number of active Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android devices across the U.S. totals approximately 110 million. The firm's research indicates that a full 50 percent of those iOS and Android owners now use mobile apps between 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm each day.
