Flurry: Mobile app downloads up 25 percent over Thanksgiving holiday
Mobile application downloads in the U.S. increased 25 percent over the four-day Thanksgiving holiday weekend compared to the previous week, according to data released by mobile application analytics provider Flurry. App downloads surged 54 percent on Thanksgiving Day compared to Thursday, Nov. 18--downloads grew 39 percent on Black Friday, sliding to a 13 percent increase on Saturday and growing just 4 percent on Sunday.
Flurry reports that the number of new devices downloading apps over Thanksgiving weekend 2010 increased 31 percent over the previous week, indicating that consumers are purchasing and activating new smartphones early in the holiday season for personal use. The number of new devices detected on Black Friday surged 57 percent over Friday, Nov. 19. Flurry credits the bulk of growth to devices running Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS as well as Android smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S, Motorola Droid 2 and LG Optimus S.
