Forecast: Mobile payments to exceed $300B by 2013
The gross transaction value of mobile payments will exceed $300 billion internationally by 2013 according to a new region-by-region study by market analysis firm Juniper Research. Citing a large and immediate opportunity for mobile payment services, systems, software and supporting services, Juniper argues that mobile devices will become a payment tool for a growing segment of the international population, with purchases spanning both digital goods like music, tickets and games as well as physical goods including gifts and books. Juniper forecasts that global annual gross transaction value will grow over five times by 2013--ticketing (for rail, air and bus travel as well as sports and entertainment events) will represent 40 percent of international transaction values, with the Far East and Western Europe generating more than 60 percent of combined revenues.
