Forecast: Mobile video revenues to reach $1.34 billion by 2014
Mobile video consumers in the U.S. will grow almost 30 percent in 2010 to 23.9 billion, doubling to 47.9 million by 2013 according to a new forecast issued by digital marketing and media research firm eMarketer. The overall number of mobile video viewers per month--including consumers of any age who view video content on mobile phones via the device browser, subscriptions, downloads or applications--will continue increasing at a compound annual growth rate of 22.8 percent from 2009 through 2014, with revenues rising from $436 million to $1.34 billion.
eMarketer states that while the quality of the mobile video viewing experience and associated subscription costs have historically impeded the platform's growth, the audience is poised for significant growth, crediting steady device improvement, increasing mobile broadband availability and the evolution of viewing options outside the operator network environment. The forecast adds that ad-subsidized mobile video revenues will outstrip revenues derived from direct downloads and subscriptions, mirroring the development of the online video segment--eMarketer anticipates ad-supported mobile video revenues will experience a 60 percent CAGR through 2014.
