Forecast: SMS revenues to hit $67B by 2012
A new report issued by Portio Research anticipates that global SMS revenues will reach $67 billion by 2012 despite declining prices. Forecasting text volumes of 3.7 trillion messages per year within five years, Portio says SMS traffic continues to increase even in mature markets, with U.S. market growth accelerating faster than expected; new subscribers continue to offset shrinking prices, with as many as 1.4 billion new mobile users expected to enter the Asian market alone by 2012. Portio also predicts that mobile IM will supplant SMS as the premier messaging solution in markets including North America.
