FORTUNE picks 9 likely IPOs, 3 are MoCos
FORTUNE picked 9 tech companies it figures will go public in the near future and three of them are very familiar mobile content companies: Hands-On Mobile (formerly Mforma), Motricity and Glu Mobile. Here's the magazine's explanations:
- Hands-On Mobile publishes downloadable games, ringtones, horoscopes and customized messaging for cellphones and is a likely candidate to go public... just because. (FORTUNE doesn't actually give a reason.)
- Motricity's software helps wireless carriers like Cingular, Sprint and Virgin Mobile sell downloadable photos, videos and ringtones from content providers. Motricity has a catalog of more than 600,000 media titles and reaches more than 120 million consumers worldwide. VC's have thrown in more than $120 million so far (FORTUNE gets it wrong with $90 million). An IPO seems likely and obvious.
- Glu Mobile makes games for mobile phones but also has a hot sports application from Fox with sports news and information. It has raised just under $58 million from investors like Sienna Ventures and Time Warner Investments.
