Foursquare eclipses 1B check-ins, brings Lists to iOS and Android apps
Foursquare surpassed the 1 billion check-ins benchmark earlier this month, announcing the milestone Tuesday on its blog. The mobile geo-social network reached 750 million check-ins in June 2011, stating around that time that its 10 million worldwide users now check in at local venues more than 3 million times each day.

Also Tuesday, foursquare said its Lists feature is now included in the latest version of its application for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS, rolling out to Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android later this week. Lists encompasses both traditional to-do checklists as well as compilations of nearby landmarks, activities, merchant promotions and related local recommendations, complete with maps. Users may also create lists on the go, recording information on places they've visited and adding destinations they want to check out.
A recent Pew Internet & American Life Project survey reports that while 28 percent of all U.S. mobile subscribers rely on their phones to get directions or recommendations based on their current location, only 5 percent of users use geo-social services like foursquare. Focusing exclusively on smartphone owners, Pew adds that 55 percent of respondents have accessed a location-based information service and one in 10 have used a geo-social check-in tool.
