Tools

Location-based mobile social network foursquare grew 3400 percent in 2010, adding its 6 millionth registered user last week. Foursquare users check in at local venues on their mobile device, earning points and virtual badges for visiting establishments on a regular basis--according to foursquare, total check-ins surpassed 381 million last year, led by October's Rally to Restore Sanity in Washington, D.C., where check-ins exceeded 30,000.

On a venue-by-venue basis, more foursquare users checked in New York's Penn Station than any other train station in 2010, followed by Tokyo's Shibuya and Shinjuku stations. New York's Ace Hotel led all hotels, trailed by Las Vegas' Wynn Hotel & Casino and San Francisco's St. Regis--New York's Museum of Modern Art led all art gallery check-ins, followed by Washington's Smithsonian National Museum of American History and Brisbane, Australia's Gallery of Modern Art. More foursquare users checked in at New York's Terminal 5 than any other live music venue--the Big Apple's Union Square Greenmarket topped all food and drink destinations, and Chicago's Webster's Wine Bar topped to wine bar category.

MTV ranks as foursquare's most popular brand page, with over 118,000 followers--Bravo is next at 114,000 followers, trailed by the History Channel (101,000 followers) and Zagat (97,000). Foursquare adds that 224 users named Wendy checked in at Wendy's fast-food locations in 2010.
