Foursquare revealed the latest user milestone Monday in celebration of the third annual 4sqDay, which falls on April 16. ("4/4^2--nerds after our own heart!" explains a post on the foursquare Blog.) Foursquare users commemorated the event with meetups across the U.S.

Foursquare reported 10 million users worldwide in June 2011, with check-ins eclipsing 3 million each day. The foursquare app is available across mobile platforms including Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS, Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android, Research In Motion's (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry and Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone. In addition to check-ins, foursquare offers users social media notifications, personalized recommendations on local businesses, discounts and coupons and insider tips from local experts and celebrities.

Although foursquare's popularity continues to grow, a Pew Internet & American Life Project survey released last year indicates that mobile check-in services remain limited to a niche audience. According to Pew, 28 percent of all U.S. mobile subscribers rely on their phones to get directions or recommendations based on their current location, but only 5 percent use geo-social services like foursquare. Focusing exclusively on smartphone owners, Pew adds that 55 percent of respondents have accessed a location-based information service and one in 10 have used a geo-social check-in tool.
