French legislators issue DVB-H broadcast licenses

Tools

French audiovisual regulator CSA awarded DVB-H mobile TV broadcast licenses to 13 private channels, including France Telecom's Orange Sports and filmmaker Luc Besson's EuropaCorp TV. In addition, CSA reserved channels for public broadcasters France 2, France 3 and Arte. Only two premium mobile TV channels, Eurosport and Canal Plus, scored CSA licenses--the others will pursue subsidized revenue models. The CSA received 36 mobile TV license applications in all, with CSA head Michel Boyon adding that more licenses will be issued if spectrum is freed up as a result of 2009's planned digital TV transition.
