Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) extended the mobile version of its music creation program, GarageBand, to the iPhone and iPod touch. The program, initially available only for Mac OS X, expanded to the iPad and iPad 2 in March. The updated version is optimized for smaller device screens.

GarageBand users can play a variety of instruments including drums.

"GarageBand on iPad has been a big hit and we think customers will love using it on their iPhone or iPod touch," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, in a statement.

GarageBand users can virtually play keyboards, drums, guitars, or bass, as well as record and mix tracks using a variety of different amps and pre-recorded chords. The app also allows users to record their voices and modify it with various effects.

In addition, users can email their creations or export them directly into iTunes.

The app is available for $4.99 in the App Store. Users who previously purchased the iPad-optimized version of the app can download the updated version for iPhone and iPod touch for free. GarageBand is compatible with both versions of the iPad, the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and 4S, as well as third and fourth generation iPod touches.
