Germany's mobile service guidelines
Germany has introduced a code of practice for value added services that include text messages, MMS and online value-added services. The aim is to "promote consumer protection" while "enabling price and product portfolio transparency." Here are a few of the guidelines:
- Double opt-in or the handshake procedure for subscription services.
- Standard key words for starting and stopping a service: START, GO, YES and OK for subscribing and STOP for unsubscribing.
- Price transparency requires operators to specify price for premium SMS/MMS services up to two decimal places. Operators must also display it directly next to the shortcode number.
- Users can unsubscribe at any time.
- Operators will send out a bill warning when a user exceeds €50 in a month.
