GetJar scores $25M in Series C, targets Android expansion
BARCELONA, Spain--Cross-platform application storefront GetJar has completed a Series C financing round totaling $25 million, led by Tiger Global Management--Accel Partners, which spearheaded the startup's Series A and B rounds, also participated. According to GetJar, the new round will support growth of its sales, marketing and engineering efforts--in particular, the firm plans to aggressively target Android developers as it strives to position its storefront as a more viable option than Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) own Android Market, which has frustrated many developer partners in areas like app discovery and monetization options.
GetJar boasts over 1.5 billion app downloads to date, with the number of downloads per month quadrupling over the past year. All GetJar apps are free; developers monetize their applications by incorporating advertising or launching demo versions through the site and upselling full-fledged premium iterations across other sales channels. GetJar's own revenue model is predicated on offering partners premium placement and promotional services--developers bid for prime real estate on the store's website, and the firm generates income according to the number of downloads that result. Both AT&T (NYSE:T) and Sprint (NYSE:S) offer the GetJar apps library to their respective subscribers.
