GetJar tackles fragmentation with App Download Page
Cross-platform app store GetJar announced the launch of App Download Page, a new service
promising to simplify the application download process by solving issues around device and operating system fragmentation. According to GetJar, App Download Page provides mobile developers and content owners with a mobile webpage that can link to any mobile site--when the webpage is displayed on a phone, it automatically detects the device model and the user is directed to the appropriate version of the app on the GetJar site. If no app exists, GetJar offers a free Mobile Site Shortcut--i.e., a small application that launches on the handset's native web browser and redirects it to the appropriate mobile site.
According to GetJar, App Download Page's official launch follows a trial with social networking giant Facebook. Photo- and video-sharing site Photobucket has confirmed it will launch the service later this fall.
