Glitch derails Windows Phone 7 update for Samsung
Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) confirmed reports that a new Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system update suffers from a glitch impacting some smartphones manufactured by Samsung. The update, pushed to consumers Monday, is intended to prepare Windows Phone 7 devices for future software upgrades; multiple users who downloaded the patch indicate it resulted in non-functioning handsets.
"We have identified a technical issue with the Windows Phone update process that impacts a small number of phones," Microsoft said in a statement. "In response to this emerging issue, we have temporarily taken down the latest software update for Samsung phones in order to correct the issue and as soon as possible will redistribute the update." A Microsoft spokesperson told The Wall Street Journal that the majority of technical issues have originated from customers with the Samsung Omnia 7.
Microsoft is expected to issue its first major Windows Phone 7 platform update in early March. The refresh is expected to include cut-and-paste functionality; a Windows Phone Developer Tools Update released earlier this month also touts improved app performance and other enhancements.
