Google kicks off Android 3.2 rollout with Motorola Xoom update

Tools

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is beginning to push out its Android Honeycomb 3.2 update, initially targeting Motorola's Xoom tablet but expanding to other large-screen devices in the near future, a Motorola representative confirmed to CNet.

Chief among the Android 3.2 enhancements: A new zoom compatibility mode designed to improve application usability on tablet devices. First announced earlier this week via Google's Android Developers Blog, the zoom mode--optimized for applications that don't expressly target Honeycomb by resizing for larger screens--does not resize the layout but instead scales the app to fill the screen. "This screen compatibility mode can improve the app's usability by emulating the app's phone-style look, but zoomed in to fill the screen on a tablet," explains developer.android.com lead tech writer Scott Main.

Android 3.2 also fully enables SD card slots and touts optimizations for seven-inch designs as well as support for Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) chips like the dual-core Snapdragon processor powering Huawei's MediaPad. Reports indicate the update additionally boasts improved performance and related usability tweaks.
