Google Mobile App for iPhone adds Goggles

Tools

Google added its Goggles visual search solution to its Google Mobile App for iPhone, enabling consumers to leverage their smartphone's camera to learn more about the world around them. Goggles--first introduced on Android smartphones late last year--analyzes images and highlights objects it recognizes. "Computer vision is a hard problem and Google Goggles is still a Labs product," writes Google Mobile Team software engineer Milan Broum on the Official Google Mobile Blog. "It works well for things such as landmarks, logos and the covers of books, DVDs and games. However, it doesn't yet work for some things you might want to try like animals, plants or food."

The updated Google Mobile App for iPhone is available as a free download via Apple's App Store. Google notes Goggles is presently enabled only for English-speaking users, and is supported only on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 running iOS 4 or above because it requires an auto-focusing camera.
