Google revamps iPhone applications suite

Search giant Google announced a series of improvements to its Grand Prix integrated iPhone software suite, debuting an improved user interface alongside revamped Search, Gmail, Calendar and Reader mobile applications. According to Google, which launched the previous version of its iPhone suite just a month ago, new bells and whistles include customization of default tabs, promising easier access to favorite applications; more efficient Gmail, including automatic inbox refreshing; and iGoogle customization. Google said it plans to expand the applications suite to international versions of the iPhone as well as other mobile platforms delivering similar usability and browser capabilities.

According to a New York Times article published today, traffic to Google from iPhones surged on Christmas, surpassing incoming traffic from rival mobile devices despite representing just 2 percent of the global smartphone population.
