Google selects iPhone platform to debut mobile app
Google launched a new application enabling iPhone users to navigate the search giant's various mobile web services via a single unified interface. The application will allow users to toggle between such services including search, Gmail, Calendar, and Reader by clicking on the navigation bar at the top of the iPhone touchscreen--in due time, it will also be available for other mobile devices, Google said. Google Mobile product manager Gummi Hafsteinsson said the decision to launch on the iPhone platform was predicated on the technological possibilities: "The Safari browser on the iPhone is essentially the same as Mac OS X, so in many ways, you get the same capability as on the desktop." Hafsteinsson added that because Safari supports AJAX, which enables the software to more accurately predict user behaviors, it can prepare information in advance, accelerating performance when switching between applications.
