Among 34 different Android-powered smartphones identified across the AdMob mobile advertising network, 11 device models generated 96 percent of total Android traffic in March, up from two devices in September 2009, according to the firm's latest Mobile Metrics Report. Motorola's Droid led all Android smartphones last month, yielding 32 percent of AdMob's Android traffic--by contrast, Google's own Nexus One drove just 2 percent of Android traffic. Devices running Android 1.5 accounted for 38 percent of AdMob's Android traffic, followed by devices on Android 2.0/2.1 (35 percent) and Android 1.6 (26 percent). Motorola led all Android manufacturers with 44 percent of traffic, narrowly edging out HTC (43 percent). AdMob adds that at least 54 percent of Android traffic originated via Qwerty keyboard-based devices.

As for Apple's rival iPhone operating system, three devices make up 84 percent of AdMob traffic: The iPhone 3GS (39 percent), the second-generation iPod touch (25 percent) and iPhone 3G (20 percent). iPhone 3GS traffic share increased from 30 percent in September 2009 to 39 percent in March, while the first-gen iPhone accounted for just 2 percent of iPhone OS requests last month.

In all, worldwide traffic across the AdMob network grew 18 percent month-over-month, totaling close to 16.7 billion total requests. The U.S. now accounts for 45.9 percent of global requests, trailed most closely by India at 7.4 percent.
