GyPSii closes $11 million private funding round
Location-enabled social media platform GyPSii announced the completion of an $11 million private funding round led by U.K.-based investment management firm Schroders, bringing the company's total fundraising to $40 million. According to GyPSii, the new funding will support the firm's marketing efforts as well as the development of new applications, among them Tweetsii, a new service promising a real-time connection between a user's social graph, nearby locations and microblogging giant Twitter. Initially released for Apple's iPhone, with Android and BlackBerry versions on tap, Tweetsii builds an aggregated real world index of places via updates from Twitter users and location-based services like Gowalla and Foursquare--users can tweet, check-in, send alerts and tips, create destinations, and geo-tag them with comments, photos and additional media content.
GyPSii is now supported by over 400 devices and across 11 major platforms worldwide. More than 1 million new users signed on in 2009.
