HP targets service providers with new mobile app store framework
Hewlett-Packard introduced the HP SDP Storefront Portal solution, a framework enabling communications service providers to build their mobile application storefronts to rival efforts from the likes of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG).
Based on HP's service delivery platform technology, SDP Storefront Portal enables service providers to launch both wholesale and retail stores. Operators can offer subscribers one-stop-shopping access to different application catalogs and efficiently browse, view and purchase apps and digital content optimized for a specific device. The solution includes a developer portal featuring APIs, self-service tools, partner relationship management and life cycle management tools alongside a test-and-certification module to ensure that apps function as intended on subscriber devices.
Mobile application downloads worldwide are on pace to grow 144 percent this year, with total downloads set to eclipse 18 billion by the end of 2011--up from 7.4 billion a year earlier--according to a recent forecast issued by telecom analyst Ovum. At the current rate of growth, downloads will exceed 45 billion by 2016, the firm adds. Premium mobile app download revenues are set to reach $3.7 billion by the end of this year, a 92 percent year-over-year increase, Ovum projects. By 2016, revenues are expected to top $7.7 billion.
