HP unveils webOS 2.0 for Palm smartphones
Almost two years after the premiere of Palm's webOS smartphone operating system, HP unveiled webOS 2.0, touting a host of new features targeting both the consumer and enterprise segments. HP webOS 2.0--debuting on the new Palm Pre 2 smartphone, slated to launch via Verizon Wireless in the coming months--includes the Stacks multitasking tool, which groups together open apps and related items to create a more efficient user experience. The upgrade also introduces Just Type, enabling users to begin composing messages, search queries and status updates without opening a particular app, as well as Synergy, which automatically populates the device with information from the user's Facebook, Google, Microsoft Exchange, LinkedIn and Yahoo accounts.
Additional webOS 2.0 features: Favorites (contact tags enabling more direct communication), Skype Mobile support, Quickoffice Connect Mobile Support for document creation and editing, Text Assist (including spellcheck, auto correct and dictionary customization). HP also promises a redesigned Palm App Catalog storefront, bolstered by improved application discovery.
