Hulu poised to debut premium service on iPad, Xbox
Streaming video site Hulu is reportedly on the cusp of introducing a premium service optimized for consumer device platforms including Apple's iPad tablet and Microsoft's Xbox gaming system. Citing multiple sources familiar with the matter, Reuters reports that Hulu--an ad-subsidized video effort owned by media giants News Corp., NBC Universal and the Walt Disney Co.--is developing a subscription-based solution scheduled to roll out in the next few months. Hulu generated an estimated $100 million in advertising revenues in 2009--sources indicate the service will continue to offer newer episodes of current primetime hits for free, but will begin charging to view older episodes and related library content. Hulu declined comment.
Rumors that Hulu would introduce an application for Apple's iPhone and iPod touch date back more than a year, although the app has yet to materialize. In April 2010, reports indicated Hulu planned to roll out a $9.95-per-month online subscription model this summer, sweetening the deal by extending the service to additional platforms like the iPad. However, Disney-owned ABC already offers ABC Player, a popular free iPad app featuring primetime hits like Lost and Grey's Anatomy--The Wall Street Journal reported Hulu CEO Jason Kilar tried desperately to convince ABC not to launch the app, fearing it could undermine the premium initiative.
