IBM serves up Android app for Wimbledon
IBM introduced a pair of new mobile applications
in support of Wimbledon 2009, the venerable tennis championship beginning June 22. According to IBM--a Wimbledon partner since 1990--the new Seer Android augmented reality application features location-aware visualization technology developed for the T-Mobile G1, promising real-time guide and interactive map services for this year's tournament as well as up-to-the-second scores. The Android app takes a live video feed from the handset's camera, and superimposes content and data associated with various points of interest into the video stream--the G1's digital compass and GPS capabilities pinpoint what the user is looking at, bolstered by additional live data and reports from across the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis Club.
IBM also launched the Seer Aggregator, a Twitter app that combines all Wimbledon-based content into one channel. The computing giant said its scouts will be onsite throughout the tournament, providing firsthand accounts and real-time updates on queues, seat availability, taxis, general travel information, live match updates and order of play. The Twitter Aggregator is optimized for most Java-enabled handsets.
