IBM serves up U.S. Open tennis content via mobile
Computing giant IBM announced an agreement with the United States Tennis Association to launch a series of personalized digital services including customized content and mobile alerts tied to the 2008 U.S. Open, going on now through Sept. 7. According to IBM, its real-time scoring system collects courtside data (e.g., unforced errors and net approaches) from each umpire's chair--the data is stored and distributed to broadcast TV, USOpen.org, an intranet system used by more than 1,500 international journalists at the event, closed circuit TV, electronic displays and automated voice applications for players. This year, IBM and the USTA are expanding their efforts to introduce new services including a mobile website, http://usopen.org/Mobile, that features real-time scores, statistics, schedules, news, photos and more. In addition, IBM promises 47 different kinds of customized text alerts, featuring everything from breaking news and match updates to TV tune-in updates and match updates according to player.
