id Software launching mobile gaming unit

Gaming developer id Software and independent production company Fountainhead Entertainment announced the launch of id Mobile, a joint venture that will create games for wireless handsets, the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation Portable. id Software is best known for franchises including DOOM, Quake and Orcs & Elves--id Mobile will be spearheaded by president Katherine Anna Kang, who served as id's director of business development prior to founding Fountainhead Entertainment. "Worldwide, mobile gaming has the potential to eclipse conventional gaming platforms," said id Software technical director and co-founder John Carmack in a prepared statement. "The resource constraints of mobile platforms reward technical and design virtuosity, making it a place where we can leverage the historic strengths of our company."
