Iranian election named top Twitter trend for 2009
The Iranian election was the dominant discussion topic among Twitter users throughout 2009, with the terms "#iranelection," "Iran" and "Tehran" all finishing among the microblogging service's top 21 Trending Topics. Writing on the Twitter Blog, chief scientist Abdur Chowdhury reports that "#musicmonday" was the top Twitter Hash Tag of 2009, followed in descending order by "#iranelection," "#sxsw," "#swineflu" and "#nevertrust." The late Michael Jackson was the most tweeted-about individual of 2009, with fellow singers Susan Boyle, Adam Lambert and Chris Brown also in the top five.
Other buzzed-about subjects, according to Twitter: The Harry Potter franchise topped tweets about movies, American Idol led talk about TV, the Super Bowl dominated tweets about sports and Google Wave edged out Snow Leopard among technology-themed tweets.
