LightSquared, Soundtracker team for geo-social mobile music service
Wholesale LTE provider LightSquared is teaming with geo-social digital radio service Soundtracker to deliver more cost-efficient access to online music regardless of the listener's location.
Soundtracker enables consumers to create and share personal radio stations, play music with friends in real time, discover new songs and artists popular with nearby listeners and connect with contacts via built-in chat features. Per terms of the deal, Soundtracker will leverage LightSquared's nationwide 4G-LTE network to bundle music with connectivity, giving consumers access to more than 11 million songs without concerns over racking up substantial monthly wireless fees.
Launched in October 2010, Soundtracker has been used by over 1 million users. In addition to native mobile apps for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS, Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android, Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone, Research In Motion's (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry and Samsung's Bada, Soundtracker offers a full HTML5 web app optimized for Google Chrome, Internet Explorer 9, Big Screen for Google TV and Samsung Smart TV.
Soundtracker joins a LightSquared wholesale customer list that stretches from Leap Wireless (NASDAQ:LEAP) to Aircado. LightSquared plans to launch commercial services in an unspecified number of major markets in the second half of next year and projects its network will cover Sprint Nextel's (NYSE:S) entire current 3G network footprint by 2014.
