Loopt launches on Android Market

Tools

Social-mapping and communication solutions provider Loopt announced it will expand its free service to Google's Android Market application storefront, promising core features including background location updating, which enables users to receive alerts when their friends are nearby. Android-based Loopt users can also toggle between map modes for satellite views of their friends map or traffic delay monitoring. In addition to sharing location and status information via mobile device, Loopt users may also post their information on social networking services like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter as well as personal blogs and websites.

According to Loopt, users can now share their location with fellow users across carrier networks including AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, T-Mobile USA, Boost Mobile and MetroPCS, with support on more than 100 handsets including Apple's iPhone and Research In Motion's BlackBerry portfolio. Of course, at this moment in time there is only one Android-based handset available to U.S. consumers: T-Mobile USA's HTC-produced G1.
