App Stores are proliferating but not all have the same goal. Apple's App Store objective is to sell more devices. Google's Android Market's goal is to build an audience for paid search. The model for RIM's BlackBerry World and Microsoft's app store is less clear cut -- they need an app store to remain competitive but they also have to be careful to not impede on their carrier relationships.
