MediaFLO expanding mobile TV to cars, portable media players
Qualcomm will extend its MediaFLO mobile broadcast solution beyond wireless handsets, targeting in-vehicle and portable media players in an effort to boost consumer adoption. Speaking Thursday at the Mobilize conference in San Francisco, Qualcomm COO Len Lauer said the wireless solutions provider will also promote MediaFLO as a platform for operators to deliver different types of mobile content. "We need to be on a lot more devices," Lauer said, according to IDG News Service.
Later this month, Qualcomm will announce an agreement with Audiovox to deliver FLO TV services to in-car entertainment systems--according to Lauer, roughly 24 million U.S. vehicles now include backseat video screens. Qualcomm will also look to add FLO TV services to MP3 players, handheld gaming devices and personal navigation devices. "You'll see us come out with an MP3-like device fairly soon that also has a full FLO TV capability," Lauer said, adding that Qualcomm also plans to introduce accessories with WiFi, Bluetooth and USB connectivity to connect with existing phones to deliver the service.
