Melodeo launches open-source mobile DRM
Melodeo launched PachyDRM, a new business model for mobile digital rights management (DRM), which Rogers Wireless and Spain's Telefonica Moviles have already adopted. Now the company is opening up its DRM specs: The source code is free but there's an annual fee of $5,000 per server for running a commercial service and a five cents per unit fee for installed copies of clients. PachyDRM supports pay-per-download transactions, subscription services and peer-to-peer music sharing. China's Access Media is the first to sign up for the open-source solution, and plans to roll it out to carriers during the second half of this year.
