Microsoft opens Windows Marketplace for Mobile
Microsoft finally announced its long-rumored Windows Mobile applications storefront at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, in addition confirming the release of the Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system as well as new WinMo phones from LG and HTC. Windows Marketplace for Mobile (not SkyMarket, as previously speculated) promises users a comprehensive site to search, browse and purchase Windows Mobile applications from WinMo phones or on a PC by using a Windows Live ID. The new app store will be included on all Windows Mobile 6.5 devices. According to Microsoft, there are presently more than 20,000 Windows Mobile applications already in existence--the software giant did not address how it will break down revenue share, nor did it state how apps will be billed.
In other Microsoft news, the company announced a series of mobile advertising wins, including partnerships with Belgian operators Mobistar and BASE, mobile travel site WAYN, and Dow Jones-owned eFinancialNews and Private Equity News. Microsoft now offers mobile advertising services including media sales, ad delivery and optimization in 12 countries.
