Microsoft promises developers 70% of WinMo app store revenues

Tools

Roughly a month after confirming the forthcoming launch of its Windows Marketplace for Mobile, Microsoft announced a number of key details on the application storefront, promising developers 70 percent of all revenues as well as transparency throughout the certification process. According to Microsoft, Windows Marketplace for Mobile--debuting in 29 countries later this year in association with the new Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system--will give application developers the flexibility to set their own prices in each market, enabling programmers to maximize their revenues based on targeting pricing strategies. Developers may also offer their apps for free. The introductory annual Windows Marketplace registration fee of $99 will include up to five application submissions--each additional registration will cost another $99, although Microsoft will waive registration fees for student developers who enroll in the software giant's DreamSpark program. In addition, Microsoft's Mobility Solutions Partner Program will offer marketing and sales support.

Microsoft will begin accepting Windows Marketplace for Mobile application submissions later this summer. While some developers creating apps for rival Apple's App Store have vented their frustrations with Apple's failure to communicate key details of the application certification process, Windows Marketplace for Mobile will tackle the issue head-on, guaranteeing developers detailed feedback during and after the approval cycle. Microsoft adds it will run a rigorous certification and testing process before Windows Marketplace apps go to market. The firm said further details will follow once registration opens in the spring.
