Microsoft releases Windows Phone Mango to manufacturers
Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) issued the release to manufacturing build of its new Windows Phone 7.1 (a.k.a. 'Mango') operating system, enabling carrier and OEM partners to optimize the code according to their specific network and device configurations.
"Here on the Windows Phone team, we now turn to preparing for the update process," Microsoft corporate vice president of engineering Terry Myerson wrote on the Windows Phone Blog. "The Mango update for current Windows Phone handsets will be ready this fall, and of course will come pre-installed on new Windows Phones."
Microsoft officially unveiled Windows Phone 7.1 in late May. Mango emphasizes tighter platform integration exemplified by App Connect, which ties applications to Bing search tools to foster a more relevant and efficient user experience. For example, if a consumer searches Bing for movie information, their Windows Phone device will generate showtimes and theater locations but also anticipate subsequent ticket purchase requirements by presenting digital movie services provider Fandango's ticketing application.
Also new in Mango: Improved Live Tiles to deliver more real-time information to the device's homescreen, app multitasking and Live Agents tools giving developers the flexibility to build app multitasking scenarios without compromising battery life and performance.
Last week, Microsoft said it will begin accepting Windows Phone 7.1 application submissions in August. The company already rolled out a new App Hub developer portal promising a more streamlined submission process--in addition, Microsoft introduced new Windows Phone Marketplace app categories and new application management tools and also expanded the app store to 19 new international markets.
