Microsoft warns developers not to undersell their apps
Despite the overwhelming dominance of bargain-priced iPhone applications available via Apple's App Store, Microsoft is encouraging Windows Mobile developers to sell their apps at prices that more accurately portray the software's true consumer value. "It's up to you play your pricing, but we would definitely want to promote that you make more money selling applications than selling your application in a dollar store," said Microsoft's Mobile Developer Experience Team's Loke Uei during a WinMo developer event held Thursday at the software giant's Redmond, Wash. headquarters. According to Uei, this philosophy is why Microsoft will incorporate revenue totals into its Race to Market Challenge, a Windows Mobile developer competition running through Dec. 31: "I know, 99 cents is interesting--yes, consumers like to pay 99 cents for applications. But 99 cents--come on, I think your app is worth more than that."
Microsoft is now accepting application submissions for its forthcoming Windows Marketplace for Mobile virtual storefront, scheduled to launch this fall in conjunction with the release of its Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system. "Your app can be worth $5.99 or $9.99, whatever the amount is, and you should be able to make more money with it," Uei said. "In that way, we also promote higher-quality applications for a higher price--a good price."
