Millennial Media: Android ad impressions in dead heat with iOS
Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS and Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android each accounted for 38 percent of smartphone impressions across the Millennial Media mobile advertising network in November 2010, both far ahead of Research In Motion's (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry at 19 percent. Smartphones represented 58 percent of all Millennial impressions last month, the firm reports, double feature phones at 29 percent; connected devices made up the remaining 13 percent.
Android apps represented 54 percent of Millennial's Application Platform Mix in November, ahead of iOS at 39 percent; Symbian (3 percent), BlackBerry (2 percent) and other operating systems round out the mix. Games led all app categories, accounting for 28 percent of mobile ad impressions last month, with Music and Entertainment in second at 22 percent.
Millennial Media adds that among developers planning to support new mobile platforms in 2011, Android leads all operating systems at 29 percent. Apple's iPad and Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 are tied in second at 20 percent each, with BlackBerry next at 12 percent.
