Millennial Media: Android ad impressions surge, iOS flatlines

Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android operating system continues to dominate traffic across the Millennial Media mobile advertising network, generating 54 percent of all impressions in August 2011--almost double Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS at 28 percent--according to Millennial's latest MobileMix report. Research In Motion's (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry follows at 13 percent of ad impressions, with Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone far behind at 1 percent.

Looking at month-over-month growth, Android impressions jumped 48 percent month-over-month, a numerical increase matched by Windows Phone. BlackBerry impressions grew 10 percent over July 2011, and iOS remained essentially flat month-over-month. Smartphones now generate 72 percent of all impressions, while connected devices like tablets and feature phones now yield 14 percent each. In August 2010, feature phones accounted for 33 percent of all Millennial Media impressions.

Mobile games continue to generate more Millennial Media traffic than any other app category, representing 25 percent of all impressions in August--a 19 percent month-over-month increase. Music and Entertainment apps grew 13 percent month-over-month and are now in second place; Millennial adds that radio apps made up more than half of all impressions in this category.
