The new Xperia Play titles, slated for rollout this summer, include 10 exclusive releases and range from massively multiplayer online efforts to casual titles--highlights include indie developer Mojang's sandbox building hit Minecraft, which touts over 8 million registered users and adds 50,000 new players every day.
Sony Ericsson also will add titles from Electronic Arts (Battlefield Bad Company 2), Gameloft (Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6 Shadow Vanguard, Dragon Hunter 2 and Eternal Legacy) and Spacetime Studios (Pocket Legends and Star Legends: The Black Star Chronicles). Sony Ericsson has so far forged partnerships with over 20 game developers, ensuring a steady flow of new Xperia Play releases. In addition, the manufacturer confirmed it will introduce a series of Xperia Play games based on classic PlayStation 1 titles.
The Android 2.3-powered Xperia Play incorporates a slide-out game pad featuring a directional keypad, dual analog touch joystick, two shoulder buttons and the four familiar PlayStation symbol keys--circle, X, square and triangle. Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) began selling the Xperia Play to U.S. consumers on May 26, rolling out the device with seven preloaded mobile titles and offering more than 50 additional games for download via the V Cast Apps storefront.
