Mobile games challenged to meet forecasts
Despite an Informa forecast that the global mobile gaming industry will reach $7.2 billion in revenues by 2010, the market continues to grow only in fits and starts from the $2.4 billion expected this year. Only about 5 percent of current mobile phone users actually download mobile games, despite the advent of more sexy marketing initiatives in Europe. To realize the market's full potential, games will have to focus more on gameplay and less on licensing. And there will have to be a better means for acquiring games as well. Those looking for growth should watch the Asian market first, as Informa predicts about half of the total mobile game revenue base will come from that region.
